What You Must Know BEFORE Marketing Anything (Plus a Freebie)

One of the questions that I get asked the most is "How do I market my (business, brand, product, etc.)?" When we begin to get serious about or blog or business, I feel like the first thing we want to do is let the entire world know about it! We pour our budget into getting marketing materials made, paying a ton for advertising and sending our product out to every blogger in the world. And then once we realize we've spent way more than we should have, we sit back and wonder why we are not seeing any results. I said "WE" because I've definitely been there too!

9 times out of 10, the reason why our marketing strategies fail is because we are not extremely clear on one thing...

Your target audience (or customer) is the back bone of your business. Without them you will never reach a consistent income & you will probably waste a ton of money and time in failed marketing attempts. You need to know literally E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G about him/her. You know how well you know your sister or best friend? That is exactly how well you should know your target customer! So you're probably thinking, how in the heck am I supposed to know someone I've never met before that well?

First ask yourself the basics. How old is she? Where is she located? What are her hobbies? What is she interested in? What is her ideal career? These questions will give you a general idea of where you should begin looking for your target customers. For example, if your target customer is a young mother, then you can automatically rule out attending and networking at events that don't cater to mothers in her age group.

After you have the basics down, then you should dig a little deeper. What frustrates her? How can you help her work through her frustrations? What value will she see in your product or service? How does your product differ from similar products/services in your industry? These questions will not only help you get a better understanding of what your community needs and is actually willing to pay for but it will guide you when you're creating your services and products and also help you stand out among the rest.

Here's a sample of my target audience for this site! When creating this blog I knew I wanted to target creative women between the ages of 23-35. She is very career driven but is unhappy in her current 9 to 5 position. She is creative & ambitious and often dreams about turning her creative passion into a profitable business that will allow her to make a full-time living doing something that she loves.

She is very eager to start or grow her current business but figuring out the "How?" is what  frustrates her. She often asks, How does she go from hobby to business? How does she gain a consistent income? How does she get over the fear of taking the leap of faith into entrepreneurship? I will eliminate that stress & confusion through my blog and coaching services by not only answering her "How's?" but creating an actionable plan that will help her get to her ultimate goal.

Once you're very clear on who your ideal customer is, what she needs and how you can clearly help her, take that into consideration when you're not only developing your products/services but where you're going to put all of your marketing efforts.
