The more I do my research for this series the more I'm amazed at how many extremely talented young WOMEN entrepreneurs are right here in North Carolina! And Alex of Sweets by Alexandria is hands down by far one of my new favorites. Starting out at just the age of four baking on her Easy Bake oven, Alexandria is now 18 years old running her own successful dessert business! Starting a business at such a young age is something many of us dream we could have done and Alex is taking charge and making it happen!
Tell me a little about the inspiration behind Sweets by Alexandria and how you got started.
My grandmother passed down her poundcake recipe to my mother which was passed down to me at the age of 13 years old. I tweaked it and made it my own and began selling the cake to friends and family. After selling out weekly, I knew that I had something. I launched my official company Sweets by Alexandria in February of 2014, at the age of 17 years old.
A lot of girls your age are deciding on what college to attend or what career path to take. How did you decide to take the leap of faith into opening your own shop?
I am definitely planning to attend college. I've always had a passion for business and after working in a few various jobs I decided that it wasn't for me. I need to be in a position where I can express my creativity and execute my visions, even if it means taking the risk of being a business owner.
If we were to open up your calendar, what is an average day like for you?
I wake up around 4am and make sure everything is being prepared for that day. I begin school at 8am and when I am finished I do things for the business such as checking emails, updating social media, returning phone calls, and making sure all supplies are ready for the next day's menu. Sometimes I work at the kiosk in the evenings.
Before baking and becoming an entrepreneur, was there another career path you considered taking?
I wanted to be an actress but I was unable to find the perfect place to really learn and perfect my craft, so I decided to move on to other things.
What has been your biggest challenge as a business owner and how did you over come it?
The biggest challenge has definitely been trying to lower expenses while still trying to offer a very high quality product.
Do you have a business mentor or a successful entrepreneur that you look up to?
I have an amazing support system which consists of my family and my god sisters who are all great mentors. Oprah is my ultimate business inspiration!
What advice would you give another young woman who wants to start her own business?
Educate yourself in whatever area you are pursuing and then go for it!
What motivates you to keep going?
I have very big dreams and aspirations that will forever motivate me.
