When I was in college you couldn't pay me to read in my free time. Actually, I was broke, you could have paid me in sandwiches. Anyways, it wasn't until I became interested in starting my own business that I fell completely in love with reading. All of a sudden I wanted to know more about business and the lives behind some of the most successful entrepreneurs. The only problem was, I still felt a disconnect with what I was reading. Some of the business books I came across made me feel like I was still back in college trying my best to understand what my professors were saying. So I started doing research for books written by creative entrepreneurs like me. All of a sudden a whole new world was opened up! Here are a few of my favorites so far.
Unlabel: Selling You Without Selling Out by Ecko, Marc (2013) Hardcover Marc Ecko is the genius mind behind the Marc Ecko clothing brand and Complex magazine. He takes you from the very beginning of his journey, to becoming a huge success, to going broke and then bouncing back all while dropping some major gems along the way!
The Right-Brain Business Plan: A Creative, Visual Map for Success When I first started my business the thought of putting together a "traditional" business plan frightened me and I could never get past the first few steps. Jennifer Lee walks you through the entire proces but through a more visual and colorful way that us creatives can understand.
Grow Your Handmade Business: How to Envision, Develop, and Sustain a Successful Creative Business Kari Chapin was one of the first creative authors that I discovered and I have fallen in love with everything that she has written. This particular book covers everything you need to know to go from hobby to successful business.
#GIRLBOSS If you've been following me for any amount of time then you know how obsessed I am with this book! Like Marc Ecko, Sophia Amoruso started from nothing and built this amazing brand around something she was truly passionate about. I've read this book twice already and will probably dig into it again before the year is over.
Building Your Business the Right-Brain Way: Sustainable Success for the Creative Entrepreneur This book is what I'm currently working on at the moment. She covers branding, figuring out your "why" and bringing money into your business by using colorful excersises that any creative would enjoy. She also provides feedback and examples from other creative entrepreneurs throughout the book.
The Handmade Marketplace, 2nd Edition: How to Sell Your Crafts Locally, Globally, and Online Another one of my favorites from Kari Chapin. In this book he covers how to successfully sell and market your creative products both on and off line.
